The Roman century - shaped road network and several archaeological finds testify that Cotignola was already inhabited in pre -Christian age; but during World War II the town was almost totally destroyed. It was then rebuilt trying to observe, as much as possible, the original urban structure. The tower of John Hawkwood, symbol of the town, and Palazzo Sforza, in which is kept the remarkable 30-40 A.C. stele of the freedman Caius Varius, are remakings of the original XIV century buildings. |
