Once estate of the family Calcagnini, this small town name's honours the count Alfonso for his great effort in reclaiming those lands. A remaining presence of the original marshy environment can still be found in the Natural Reserve of Alfonsine, which is part of the Natural Park of river Po Delta. The visitors centre of the park is located in the native house of the poet Vincenzo Monti. The town, which has been harshly damaged by World War II bombing, preservers important memories of the liberation front along river Senio in the Museo della Battaglia del Senio. |
