The history of Sant'Agata has always been closely related to its river, the Santerno, which used to be an important way of communication between Spina and the Etruria since before the Romans. Due to its strategic location, the town has always been contested amongst the lords of Romagna, Ferrara and the Papal State; Sant?Agata became part of the province of Ravenna after the unification of Italy and in 1863 started to be called with its present name. During World War II, harsh roundups and heavy bombings left the town torn apart with very deep wounds. |
