Raccoglitori Creativi

The Ecomuseo delle Erbe Palustri in Villanova, Bagnacavallo, will be the venue of a wickerwork courses to be held on 4 and 5 November.

These coursee are part of the educational policies of the Ecomuseum and their aim is to pass down and protect the art of basketry by teaching how to make traditional hand-made objects.

How
> The courses are aimed at adults who already have some experience in basket weaving as well as first-timers. A maximum number of 10 people (6 for the marsh grasses workshop and 4 for the basket chair) are allowed for the courses so as to facilitate teaching, and learning, the techniques in detail.
> The “Cantiere Aperto” will supply the raw materials needed for the course. The participants have to bring a pair of pruning shears, a pocket knife and a chair.
> For proper organisation of space and materials needed, if you are interested in taking this course you are kindly asked to register as soon as possible.

Course Programme
During the first day, participants are welcomed and taken to the room where the course will be held. There will be an introduction meeting with the projection of an audiovisual showing the history of this ancient craft and the places from where the raw material is obtained.
Afterwards the participants will meet master wicker worker Rodolfo Onori, and will explain the kind of experience in the craft each of them has. After this meeting, some info-teaching sheets will be handed out.
Also during this first day, participants will get a guided tour along the different halls of the wicker and basketry museum to get a first-hand contact with hand-made items and the XIX Century techniques that will be taught at the course. The visit ends with a walk along the “Villanova delle Capanne” Ethno-park to see the wicker willow plantations, as well as spontaneous vegetation and hedges, fresh or dry.
You get fully immersed in the course in the morning of the first day when the raw material is selected and you will start to make the first objects- a Romagna-style round basket for the ricotta and a basket with its handles- under the supervision of the master wicker worker.
The raw material used will be basket willow, widely used in both our region and the whole Europe. This material is easy to find since it grows naturally and abundantly in the area surrounding the Lamone River. It is also grown in our countryside applying a lopping technique, “vite maritata” (tree-trained vine) style.
